Decorate Your Room - and Have Some Fun!

By Norita Sieffert

It is finally time. Possibly you enjoy redecorating. Or perhaps you really dislike it. It doesn't have to be a chore however. Redecorating can be enjoyable. Get started by dreaming big! If you are looking over a room you've used for a long time and you're ready to change it, then go right ahead and see it exactly as you would hope to have it when you're finished. Don't get cut-rate in your mind just yet. Go for it and visualize it with every single article you would like to have.

As you're dreaming big, begin with the ceiling and proceed down to the floor. Think about painting the ceiling or possibly adding some special accents. People tend to ignore the ceiling, but it can be very pretty if it's done right. Next, take a look at the walls. You can add paint or maybe wallpaper, or even think about paneling. Also visualize what it would look like with wainscoting or a chair rail. If you have artistic tendencies you could add your own touches as well.

The color you decide on is highly important. First you should consider the feeling you wish to communicate in this space. Blues are peaceful and appealing, but a very light blue can come across as cold. Reds are dazzling and lively, but can be threatening and incite rage. Yellows are bright and cheerful, but an overwhelming amount of yellow can actually make people feel edgy. Oranges are a happy medium between red and yellow and are lively and happy. Purples remind people of sophistication. Greens are calm and soothing.

Now you are ready to think about the floor. You have a lot of options for the floor, like carpeting, vinyl, linoleum, wood or paint. You'll want an option that will harmonize with your wall color. Think about the kind of traffic the room will be subject to. If people are going to clomp through from the outside then carpet might not be the right fit. Determine also how you will be using the room as you contemplate the appropriate flooring type.

At last you are ready to consider the furniture and accessories for this space. If this is a bedroom then dream big and figure out what kind of bed you'd enjoy. You can choose from poster beds, sleigh beds, platform beds, etc... Kids really have fun with bunk beds. Next you can browse the Internet or catalogs and pick out the comforter set that will really make the room sizzle. You can insert an existing comforter inside a new duvet cover and change the look without draining your wallet. Or you can go full bore and buy a new down comforter set. Fit the rest of the furniture in the room to the bed, which is the room's centerpiece. There is no limit at this point. Imagine all of it as you want it to look.

If this is a living area or den then dream big and picture the type of furniture you would love to sit on. Furniture can be overstuffed or austere. It can be leather or suede or even cloth. You can choose your color based on your walls and floors. You can crowd the room with furniture or leave it open. Do you want to add pictures or photos to the walls? What kind of curtains, shades or blinds do you see for the windows? Should you add some decorative touches such as pillar candle arrangements or collectibles? Do you want some decorative pillows and throw rugs?

Now that you've imagined all the things you really want it is time to get realistic. You may have to pare down your list and get rid of a few objects that you either can't find or can't afford at this time. But review each article before you take it off the list. What feeling do you get? If you feel joy when you think about it, then maybe you should hold onto this item. If you don't feel anything one way or another then cross it off. When you're through you'll have a workable list.

The last part is the actual work. But this doesn't have to be drudgery. First, plan time to get it done and eliminate all interruptions. Pick up all the supplies ahead of time and cancel all your plans so that you can focus on finishing this on time. Also, invite friends to help you and make a party out of it. Have a barbeque lunch while you're working, and plan a great party to celebrate the finished product. Don't forget to take before and after shots and place them around the room to let everyone see what's changed. As someone said, the satisfaction of a job well done is its own reward!
